Genet specialises in representing children in complex and high-risk public law proceedings and is primarily instructed by Children’s Guardians. Undertaking advocacy in cases involving non-accidental injury, sexual abuse, child sexual exploitation, female genital mutilation, secure accommodation and deprivation of liberty orders, Genet has a particular passion for working with teenagers and is known for her ability to build trust and communicate effectively with older children navigating complex family situations.
In addition to her work representing children, Genet also acts for parents, extended family members, and intervenors, including those represented by the OS. She undertakes her own advocacy and has significant experience in private law disputes involving contact, residence, education, medical treatment, relocation, and protective orders such as non-molestation and occupation orders.
Genet is known for her calm and focused approach, particularly when working with extremely vulnerable or high-risk clients. She is frequently recognised for going above and beyond to support those she represents. Her Honour Judge Sapnara noted in 2019: “I express my gratitude to Ms Amare… without her assistance and efforts, which have gone beyond what is usual, matters would not have progressed as they have.”
In 2021, Recorder Delahunty similarly acknowledged her commitment in a complex case: “I wish to especially acknowledge the dedication of the mother’s legal team to their lay client’s case and her care. They have represented the best qualities of the legal aid Bar in the efforts they have gone to support her and to put her case to the court.”
Genet is a passionate advocate for access to justice and has worked exclusively in the legal aid sector throughout her career. During the national lockdown, she set up a helpline collaborating
with national domestic abuse charities to offer daily pro bono telephone advice clinics for victims of abuse and those in urgent need of protection. Her passion for giving back is further evidenced by her involvement in the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower fire. Drawing on longstanding connections in the local community Genet was on the ground within hours working closely with affected families and community organisations, later contributing to the legal work arising from Phase 1 of the Grenfell Inquiry.
Genet is fluent in Amharic, and enjoys spending time with her family and friends, travelling, listening to music, and exploring the arts.
