The book is based on a true story about a lawyer defending people on death row. Elysia thought it was quite an intense read but very interesting and explores racism in the South both in communities and in the justice system. The book mostly follows the story of one man on death row, but he also talks about other cases which the lawyer/author has worked on throughout his career.

One part Elysia found very interesting and also very troubling was the treatment of children charged with offences, and who were often tried in adult courts and sentenced to life imprisonment in adult prisons.
